Things are threatening to come to a head. All indications are that President Donald Trump may be trying to start World War III in an attempt to divert attention from Trump-Russia and the recent FBI raid on his attorney, Michael Cohen. Russia has threatened to retaliate in the event of such a strike. For instance, Alexander Zaspikin, Russia’s ambassador to Lebanon, has stated that Russia would shoot down our missiles and target our ships in the event of an American missile strike. We don’t know how far up Mr. Zaspikin is in the food chain. But other Russian officials have warned of “grave consequences” should the US strike Syria again. And another Russian official, Vladimir Shamanov, made similar remarks.
Trump has just tweeted:
The Harry Truman is deploying to “Europe and the Middle East.” The last time it deployed, it flew 2,000 aircraft sorties and dropped 819 pounds of bombs.
All efforts must be made for the sake of humanity’s survival to stop the madness so that cooler heads will prevail. In all likelihood, Syria is the likely perpetrator of the recent chemical attack despite Russia’s denials. But it wouldn’t hurt to conduct an investigation and let the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons do its job just to make sure.
Even if Syria was the perpetrator, why now? There have been plenty of other allegations that the Syrian government has been using chemical weapons. We are not the world’s policeman. If we continue to try, it’s only a matter of time before someone else decides to do the same things to us that we do to the rest of the world. There are plenty of measures that we can take against their use of chemical weapons, such as financial sanctions, allowing more refugees into our country, and helping other countries resettle refugees. Target the people who are egging on Putin and Assad against our country.
The worst-case scenario is that Putin has adopted the belief that he would rather see the world destroyed than accept American hegemony. He meddled in our elections, not because he was Trump’s friend, but because he would rather see the world destroyed and he knew Trump was unhinged enough to provoke it. The best-case scenario is that cooler heads will prevail, like they did during the Cuban Missile Crisis. But we can’t keep living on the edge. If you keep living on the edge, it’s only a matter of time before you fall off the edge.
